Understanding EMI in Power Systems

Common-Mode vs. Differential-Mode Noise

Common-Mode (CM) Noise: Appears equally on both power lines with respect to earth ground. Generated by parasitic capacitances in transformers and semiconductor switching.

Differential-Mode (DM) Noise: Appears between the power lines. Generated by the switching action of power converters and conducted through the power path.

Effective EMI filtering requires addressing both CM and DM noise components.

Frequency Considerations

EMI requirements vary by frequency range:

  • 9kHz - 150kHz: Conducted emissions (mostly differential mode)
  • 150kHz - 30MHz: Both common and differential mode emissions
  • 30MHz - 300MHz: Radiated emissions (often caused by common mode currents)

Vicor filters are designed to provide attenuation across these critical frequency ranges.
